Harbans Singh Grover

October 5th, 1934 – September 11, 2010

Born to Harnan & Mohan Grover. Both his parents died at early age. At 16, Harbans moved to England to continue his education in the Arts & Architecture. At 22 years, he returned to India to start his own architectural firm. That same year, 1959, he married his beautiful bride Jagdish Sachdeva. In the 8 years they lived in New Delhi, they had two children, Komal & Tejpal, and he gained much experience in designing homes and businesses. Opportunity to join an architectural firm brought them to Ottawa, Canada in 1967 where Harbans excelled in designing schools and hospitals. 18 months later, an opportunity arose again to join another firm across the border near Buffalo, NY, where he continued designing schools, hospitals and businesses. His fine work drew the attention of officials at the SUNY system, New York’s finest public universities. In Buffalo, Harbans became the University Architect and Director for Architectural Services at the University of New York at Buffalo to aid in the design, implementation, and building of a new campus in Amherst, as well as the refurbishing of many buildings and schools on the Buffalo Main Street campus. Over the nearly 20 years he worked for the University, the community saw his efforts grow into the beautiful SUNY Amherst campus you see today.

In his retirement, Harbans enjoyed travelling with his family, painting, photography, and apartment management. He was active and contributed to his Sikh Gurdwara community of Williamsville. He was thankful of his many friends in his church community and also his neighborhood in Williamsville.Harbans was very proud of his two children’s developments.

Pany earned her PhD in psychology and Tejpal his medical degree. Tejpal is now practicing in Houston, Texas. Altogether, Har- bans has 6 grandchildren. In Whittier, Pany and her husband Dr. John Sudick, have 3 children: Kirpa 18, Arjan 16, and Harbans 14. Dr. Tejpal Grover and his wife Dr. Tina Grover have 3 children as well: Matthew 15, Steven 13, Alyssa 8. He is survived by his loving wife Jagdish. We will greatly miss his love and devotion to his family.

I have known Harbans for nearly 28 years. His kindness, charity, and love for his community and family were great. He touched many lives and reached out to help many young Sikhs to find connections, and jobs. I have been married to his beautiful daughter for 26 years. It was his openess and willingness to bring me into the Sikh community in Buffalo, NY that allowed me to learn so much about the Sikh faith. I will miss his affection, his fatherly love, and his wonderful sense of humor we shared. Harbans has been an artist his whole life. It was 24 years ago after a heart attack that he retired from his architectural work and took up painting again. Pany and I bought a painting kit and his interest in painting Sikh figures and landscapes in watercolors and oils took off. His patience and detail in his Sikh Horseback riders and figures in Sikh history is amazing. I will miss him working at the workbench in my garage at an artists table listening to classical music and getting lost in his painting. His grandchildren will miss his love and affection, but will have his artwork forever to share his creative spirit. We love you Dad, Dr. John Sudick, http://www.WhittierDentalOffice.com

    Dear John and Pany,

I have, over the days since the demise of Harbans, kept both of you in my prayers, asking the Lord to console you with His loving grace.
You can be sure of my prayers.
