Sikh Courier International Online
Sikh Courier International is the mouthpiece of World Sikh Foundation (founded in 1960) and The Sita and Amar Singh Chhatwal Sikh Trust (2002) incorporation Sikh Cultural Society of Great Britain.
In early 1960, Dr. JIT Singh Chandan who was a student at Wigan Technical College at Wigan, Lancashire conceived the idea of forming The Sikh Cultural Society of Great Britain and started publication of The Sikh Courier. He was helped in this by Dr Ajit Singh Bittoo. Mr Amar Singh Chhatwal got involved in Sikh Courier soon after his arrival in UK in 1962.
In 1965, when both Dr JIT Singh and Dr Ajit Singh left for USA and Canada respectively and Mr Chhatwal took over the entire management of Sikh Courier. Initially Dr JIT and Dr Ajit were co-editors. After Dr JIT’s departure to USA, Dr Ajit enlisted the help of Mrs Pamela Wylam who later became Manjit Kaur. They both were co-editors till 1965 when Dr Ajit left for Canada. Manjit Kaur edited the magazine till 1969 when she was joined by Mr Inderjit Singh (now Lord Inderjit). After Mrs Manjit Kaur’s departure in 1980, Mr Inderjit became the editor till 1984.
The present Chief Editor, Dr S.S.Kapoor took over these duties in 1984 and remains the current editor. The entire management of Sikh Courier e.g. Fund collection, advertisements, publishing, distribution etc. was handled by Mr Amar Singh Chhatwal from his residence. It was through his full time devotion and toil that this magazine continued publication until his demise in 2002.
Since then, his daughter Harjas Babli Bharara has taken over the management duties. In this she has been joined by Dr Amarjit Singh Chopra. Initially Sikh Courier International was a quarterly magazine. Since 2004 it has become bi-yearly due to constraints of reducing advertising revenues and other income. Also costs of publication and postage has gone up a lot. At present over 1000 copies are printed and distributed to individuals and libraries all over the world. It has been the policy of World Singh Foundation to publish purely religious articles on Sikh Religion.
Moving with the times we are starting a website where our magazine would be uploaded regularly and will be available to users of internet.
